BugOff! on Newgrounds | BugOff! on Itch.io
In Bug Off! the player follows Shyella, a shy beetle daring to have an exciting night out at the famous "Bug Club". There she will meet a cast of colorful characters that will help her break out of her nervous shell and shine on the dance floor.
Shyella ventures into the club for the first time. Being nervous and shy she struggles to even enter the premise but the timely intervention Chanterelle, the club owner, shows our protagonist how she can have a good time on the dance floor. She shows potential!
From then on, Shyella will meet a gallery of colorful beetles, dancing it off with them multiple times, learning new dance moves, testing herself with an increasing difficulty, and talking to them in between songs. Why, she might even score a date or two with her fellow club goers!
Bug Off! is an animation-focused rhythm game with a dating sim flair. Produced for Web and Android release, it works on most screen sizes and allows for a wide variety of input methods: Keyboard, Trackpad/Mouse, Gamepad, Touchscreen.
Before and after each dance, the titular bugs exchange a bit of banter and narrative content, introducing character personalities and developing individual story lines. In between narrative bits, the core activity is a dance performed by mirror-matching, with the correct timing, the dance moves performed by the current dance partner. This results in a score, combo multiplier, and overall accuracy level, all summarised in an after-dance screen.
The game presents two game modes: Easy and Hard.
In both, the player will encounter 5 different dance partners, learning to master various combinations of 5 input/moves: Tap, Up, Down, Left, Right.
Easy Mode allows the player to dance with only one partner, showing a gallery of other available-but-locked ones. During the dance, the partner will introduce one new input/move, let the player exercise it three times, then start the real dance featuring their specific move, plus any other previously introduced moves. Once the dance is over, a new bug is unlocked. After the last bug has been danced with, Hard Mode is unlocked.
Hard Mode allows the player to dance with any bug, which now sport all the moves, with ramped up difficulty based on less predictable timing and more frequent combos. After each dance a "best score" indication shows the player their best performance with that specific dance partner. Hard Mode also develops the narrative elements of the game, first introduced during Easy Mode.
